Varese and our gastronomic tradition won”

Last Sunday the square in Varese was also the scene of a curious coincidence, the story of two risottos in an unexpected competition: that of the League and the one, in solidarity, destined for the Casa della Carità della Brunella. We wrote about it in an article to whom the city secretary of the League now responds Marco Bordonaro. Here are his thoughts:

Dear Stefania and dear Varesenews,
I read the article on the “risotto fight” and I can assure you that the presence of two “risotto” at the same time was the result of a banal coincidence of dates; organizing the party for the forty years of the League and bringing many members of the Government as well as our representatives in various institutions to the streets, among the people, is – believe me – a logistically very complex operation.

As regards our “supreme risotto maker”, the very well-known and highly appreciated Lillo, I think he did not much appreciate the comparison with Peppone, above all for obvious reasons of different political sympathies, even if both are – quoting Gramsci – happily national-popular characters.

We asked ourselves the problem of the presence of the two events at the same time, but we are still a capital of eighty thousand inhabitants and we were certain we would not cause any trouble to the valuable initiative of the Casa della Carità. So it was: perhaps the only difficulty was finding parking, as has often happened in Varese recently. The dishes served (free of charge) at the League party were around six hundred, and those at the Canonica were one thousand. The only regret? Not having had the time or opportunity to taste chef Barzetti’s risotto, but I can guarantee you that even the one – based on luganega – prepared by our Lillo and his, I quote your article, “curiosa banda”, was definitely worth it!

Both events were a success, and it is a great victory for Varese and for one of our typical dishes, risotto. So, long live Varese, long live our gastronomic tradition, and above all long live the “curious gang” of risotto!

Marco Bordonaro
Secretary of the Varese League
