The guest of honor

On the centenary of his birth, in the place where his revolution took place and from which it started, the guest of honor could only be Franco Basaglia, the Venetian psychiatrist born on 11 March 1924 who closed the mental hospital of San John, and not only that, but above all he freed people, gave them back their dignity and recognition. When, in 1971, he began this adventure in Trieste, after the experience of Gorizia and Parma, he certainly did not have in mind the conversion of the former psychiatric hospital that would follow nor the rose garden, but the signs of the possible transformation they were all present: it was no coincidence that he opened this place to artists, it was no coincidence that he filled it with colorful and designer objects, it was no coincidence that he physically broke down the gate to let out what had been relegated inside. All gestures that served to humanize a wounded place and put the person back at the center.

At 11.00 on Saturday 20 April, starting from some texts by Franco Basaglia read by Maurizio Zacchigna, Giovanna Del Giudice, president of Conf Basaglia, and Giancarlo Carena, president of the Monte San Pantaleone Agricola cooperative, will discuss the theme “The evolution of San Giovanni Park”.

What the walls taste like

Today that mental hospitals have been officially closed there is no less need to break down walls and prejudices and Horti Tergestini also serves to remind us of this: for this Saturday 20 April at 5.00 pm the presentation of the book “What flavor have walls” is scheduled ( CasaSirio, 2023), a text with which the journalist Paolo Aleotti, who since 2014 has directed the TeleRadioreporter Laboratory at the second prison in Milan, in dialogue with Emily Menguzzato will take us into the Bollate prison where he collected the stories of those who decided to open up and offer him your experiences, your doubts, but above all the most precious thing: your dreams.

The laboratories

Three workshops will be offered during the weekend: one dedicated to the art of mixing spices with Valeria Calamaro (Saturday 20 April, 3.00 pm), one dedicated to sustainable and ecological floral decoration with Laura Vaccari (Sunday 21 April, 11.00 am), one dedicated to ikebana with Giovanna Coen (Sunday 21 April. 3.00 pm). Participation in the workshops is free upon reservation at the following address [email protected] or by contacting the Agricola Monte San Pantaleone stand.

Proposals for the little ones

This year too, there will be special attention given to boys and girls aged 5 to 12 and their families: on Saturday 20 April from 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm in Piazza Leggera in front of the Mini Mu Children’s Museum there will be a workshop entitled “Mark Rotko and colour, thoughts on display”: in this case too, reservations are appreciated ([email protected], +39 333 2611573).

Horti Tergestini was created thanks to the entrepreneurial tenacity and determination of the social cooperative Agricola Monte San Pantaleone; this year’s event can still count on the collaboration of the ERPAC (Regional Cultural Heritage Authority) of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the Municipality of Trieste, the University of Trieste, the Giuliano Isontina University Health Authority and the support of AcegasApsAmga.
