PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – Not a simple homage to memory, but a real journey aimed at transferring the figures and work of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino into the present and future. The setting is Palazzo Jung, in Palermo, where this morning, in the presence of students, political authorities (led by the president of the parliamentary anti-mafia commission Chiara Colosimo) and representatives of the judiciary, the Blue Library was inaugurated: the latter is inserts Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino into the Museum of the Present with textual and image stories of the activity carried out by them and by the other figures, Sicilian and otherwise, who sacrificed their lives to fight the mafia.
For Maria Falcone, Giovanni’s sister and president of the Foundation of the same name, the opening of the Library represents a milestone for the work carried out over many years: “My secret dream has always been to create a museum to pass on not the past, but the present: being an eternal place, we want the memory to remain eternal and be shared among everyone. Today a circle closes and another opens: when Giovanni died I despaired both as a sister and as an Italian citizen, he left us something very important because on the eve of the maxi-trial, knowing that it would end as it ended, he thought only to tell us that each of us should do our part, small or large”. It is therefore a memory that is not only cultivated, but also updated: “The Foundation had to fight not only with the mafia, but also with a certain friendly fire: the fight against Cosa Nostra must come from every level of society”.
Colosimo underlines the symbolic and political value of what May 23, 1992 represented for her: “I was a child at the time of the Capaci massacre and from there my political activity wanted to follow that history: I was also elected president of the parliamentary anti-mafia commission precisely on May 23rd. As regards our activity, we immediately dealt with the 57 days between the Capaci and Via D’Amelio massacres: although Cosa Nostra did not find its end, we still dealt it very hard blows, most recently the one relating to Messina Denaro . My fear is that this civil revolt, which started above all in Palermo, could weaken and leave room for new forms of organized crime, such as vote-swapping.” Part of the new library is also financed by Irfis which “is an institute of fundamental importance for economic development and the promotion of legality in Sicily – ha. President Iolanda Riolo explained -. Businesses are the engine of a region’s economy, and supporting their growth and competitiveness is essential to ensuring prosperity and job opportunities.” To achieve this objective “Irfis plays various key roles to achieve this objective and currently does so through eight measures currently active, but also carrying out the role of bank in support of Sicilian businesses with absolutely competitive rates compared to the market and an ability to examine requests quickly and completely within the framework of the supervisory rules dictated by the Bank of Italy. The role of Irfis, as desired by the Region, is to facilitate access to credit for Sicilian businesses, especially for those that may have difficulty obtaining financing through traditional channels. This can be fundamental to allow them to invest in growth, innovation and job creation”, concluded Iolanda Riolo.
