Cinesinho, one of the greatest footballers in the history of Catania.

16 April 2011. Exactly thirteen years ago, the former Catania midfielder Sidney Colônia Cunha, known as Cinesinho, passed away. An authentic flag of the red and blue history left us after having fought against Alzheimer’s for a long time.

The “little” Cinesinho was purchased by Catania – via Inter – in the summer of 1963. He had a small physique but proved to be an authentic driving force in the Etna midfield, making the difference in the court of coach Carmelo Di Bella, often scoring his teammates. In his first season in Catania, the Brazilian also scored three goals, all against Lazio and Roma. The following year, again in Serie A, Catania scored in bursts and much of the credit went to him, providing a highly significant number of assists for his teammates.

At the end of the championship the move to Juventus was formalised, called upon to replace none other than Omar Sivori. Cinesinho did not disappoint expectations, experiencing three exciting seasons. He subsequently moved to Vicenza, and then played abroad before embarking on a coaching career without much luck (Vicenza, Foggia, Forlì, Palmeiras, Modena). His face was included in the mural of the “Angelo Massimino” stadium among the 50 protagonists in the history of Calcio Catania.
