«I leave two thousand more trees for the green heritage»

The electoral campaign that will lead to the vote on 8 and 9 June for the renewal of the city council and the mayor is increasingly coming to life. After last Saturday’s presentations of the two challengers of the outgoing mayor, Carlo Masci, with the candidacies of Carlo Costantini for the center-left – Pd and M5S, with the addition of the civic lists – and of Domenico Pettinari, former five-star member supported by two civic lists – yesterday it was the turn of the mayor in office. Carlo Masci, in fact, accompanied by the councilor for public green spaces, Gianni Santilli, wanted to respond to the criticisms coming especially from Costantini regarding the environment. “There is a lack of greenery in the city,” the center-left leader said on Saturday in Largo Chiola, supported, in particular, by Simona Barba’s Radici in comune association: which will present candidates in a list that includes the Italian Left and Green Europe. Yesterday the response from Masci and Santilli, the latter re-nominated with FdI.

POSITIVE BALANCE

«In the five years of his mandate, 4,748 trees were planted and 2,471 were felled – Masci specified, with data in hand – and the fellings were due to the precarious phytosanitary and vegetative conditions which jeopardized public safety. Other fellings, however, resulted from meteorological events or road accidents, so the balance of the tree balance of the Municipality of Pescara, drawn up by the Public Green and Parks Service, is absolutely positive and is equal to more than 2,277 trees. The centre-left, in the previous administration, instead presented a balance of 50 trees”. Yesterday in the council room Masci then showed a video of his past electoral campaign in which he promised a “green” relaunch of the city: «A relaunch that has happened – he underlined -. For maintenance the amount allocated was 5 million and 813 thousand euros, plus 2 million and 717 thousand euros for new interventions”. In short, more than 8 and a half million euros “on our part”, while in the previous 2014-2019 tree budget “for maintenance the amount allocated was equal to 2 million and 761 thousand euros, plus 689 thousand euros for new interventions ». Among other things, these data must be accompanied by the number of existing trees in the city which are approximately 25 thousand; However, there are 87 city parks. For more precise data on the number of trees, however, we will have to wait for the completion of the tree census currently being carried out. In yesterday morning’s meeting, which was also attended by the managers and managers of the Environment sector, Emilia Fino and Mario Caudullo, councilor Santilli recalled “the 2021 fire that destroyed a large part of the D’Annunzio pine forest”.

NOTICE FOR THE PINE FOREST

Furthermore, Santilli also clarified what will be the fate of the trees that have now been piled up in the pine forest, clearly visible from the reclamation road. «The pine trees that have been removed – clarified the councilor – will be awarded through a public auction aimed at specialized companies. Whoever wins it will have the task of removing them.” Finally, Santilli himself has targeted the political association Radici in comune and other environmentalist groups. «For 5 years – he underlined – we have suffered crazy attacks from pseudo environmentalists who think they understand everything. But to do this work in our city, we have relied on expert people: our agronomists, forestry doctors and the experts that the mayor has appointed.”
