Meloni arrives at the stand

At the Abruzzo Space of Vinitaly in Verona, the air is more lively than ever. It will be for the new and particularly popular area dedicated to Trabocco sparkling wine, Italian method and made in Abruzzo; for the enthusiasm of the winemakers who arrived in force to present the best of their production in the pavilions of one of the largest international fairs dedicated to wine and for the many events, including tastings and masterclasses, promoted by the Region and the Wine Protection Consortium. And then a succession of institutional visits starting with that of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty Francesco Lollobrigida present yesterday at the Spazio Abruzzo.

Welcomed by the president of the Region Marco Marsilio, by the vice president and regional councilor for Agriculture Emanuele Imprudente and by the president of the Consortium for the protection of Abruzzo wines Alessandro Nicodemi, President Meloni quickly visited the Spazio Abruzzo, after having met in the auditorium of the exhibition center the students of agricultural institutes on the first national day of Made in Italy, on the day of the birth of Leonardo da Vinci, desired by the government to “celebrate the Italian genius”. An agenda, that of the prime minister on the second day of Vinitaly, which has undergone several changes, due to the need for the head of government to return to Rome for the emergency summit after Iran’s attack on Israel.

THE SECTOR
President Marsilio focused on the importance of the Abruzzo wine sector. «The market is growing, our wines are appreciated, we are on the right path – he underlined -. The Abruzzo wine world has chosen to invest in quality, it is a positive job that is bearing good fruit. Some vines that were previously little known or were not part of the Abruzzo tradition such as white wines or bubbles are emerging on the international market. Today we have a wider offer, we cannot just focus on Montepulciano or Trebbiano. Here at Vinitaly we have, for example, the participation of almost one hundred wineries present with important labels. Until the 1970s, Abruzzo wines had little presence on the market, today the culture has changed, there is more communication and attention and the results are there for all to see.”
A celebration, that of Verona, led by over one hundred producers present at the Abruzzo stand and in the other pavilions which can count on an ever-growing consensus of Abruzzo wines, with exports growing by 11% compared to 2022, equal to 255 million euros in turnover . Alongside Germany, it remains the main market with 19.6%, Abruzzo wines are also appreciated on the markets of the United States (13%), United Kingdom (10.4%), Switzerland (8.5%) and the Netherlands (8.2%). At the 56th edition of Vinitaly, the two wines that achieved extraordinary results in 2023 were also presented: Pecorino d’Abruzzo Doc and Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo Doc. The data, in fact, illustrate a growth in the sale of bottles in large-scale retail trade, both Cerasuolo (+19%), and Pecorino (+12%). As regards Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, however, sales recorded a +4%, in contrast to other main Italian red wines which ended 2023 with a negative figure. According to experts, the result is still positive, if we consider the effects of the negative year of 2023. «Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo Doc and Pecorino d’Abruzzo Doc are two wines that represent a certainty for winemakers and Abruzzo people» observed Giuseppe Knight.
