TO Turin it won’t be possible no more smoking outdoors at a distance less than five metres by other people without their explicit consent. The prohibition applies in any case in the presence of children or pregnant women. The decision was made by the city council which approved it today “courtesy distance for smokers”. The approved resolution modifies the Urban Police Regulation and recalls that “some Italian cities have already banned smoking in parks while in Turin there is a ban in play areas”. The provision concerns cigarettes, cigars, pipes, heated tobacco, any combustion product, electronic cigarettes.
Outdoors, therefore, you can continue to smoke, but stay at least 5 meters away from other people. The resolution to amend the municipal regulation was proposed by the Radicals councilor Silvio Viale. For the proponent of the act it is “a cultural issue and respect between people. Walking away when smoking is something that is normally done out of good manners.” “The measure – adds Viale – it will contribute to reducing the impact of smoking, which remains the main cause of medical and oncological diseases, and will encourage more conscious consumption. And hopefully it will also increase responsibility towards abandoning cigarette butts. A norm – concludes Viale – which gives a cultural direction while protecting the freedom of both those who smoke and those who do not smoke“.
