The State Library of Cremona and Cremonabooks will present the volume

“Giuseppe Garibaldi, a walking monument”

Of Alvaro Mario Ferlenghi.

The event will be held Thursday 4 April at 4.30pm at the Libraryand it will be an opportunity to immerse yourself in the history and mysteries linked to the Cremonese monument dedicated to one of the protagonists of the Risorgimento.

Thanks to an in-depth historical investigation, Ferlenghi’s story has brought ancient documents to light, revealing the intricate movements that the monument has undergone over time. The statue moves and transforms, just like the great patriot Giuseppe Garibaldi.

“Here: the story, the result of careful archival research, that Alvaro Ferlenghi tells, starts from here, from the death of Garibaldi and the decision in Cremona, as in almost all Italian cities, to dedicate a monument to him. With the background of the visits to the city in 1862 and, for a single day, in 1867. Visits that testify to the enormous popular affection he enjoyed, which strikes the reader of the news of the time.” so we read in the preface written by Gian Carlo Corada.

In the afterword Claudio Pedrazzini concludes: “This book by my friend Alvaro Mario Ferlenghi talks to us about a topic perhaps unknown even to many Cremonese: the vicissitudes of a monument of the Hero who is constantly traveling. Yes, you understood perfectly: it is the monument that is always traveling, not the Hero, in this case. It is a work that, in a certain sense, is unique; the study, very in-depth on archival documents, of a series of movements of the monument to Garibaldi from the city center to the railway station square and from there other and constant movements to find the best position… told like this, the matter would seem like a pochade of not excellent French taste; reading the book one has a pleasant sensation of something new, fresh, I would dare to write fragrant”.

The author will speak at the presentation Alvaro Mario Ferlenghi, Raffaella Barbierato director of State Library, Gian Carlo Corada And Claudio Pedrazziniready to share their knowledge and reflections on this fascinating topic with the public.
