Bari mourns Simeone Di Cagno Abbrescia: the former mayor of Bari died at the age of almost eighty. Elected mayor of Bari in 1995 and then reconfirmed in 1999, Di Cagno Abbrescia went down in history for the revolution of old Bari with the Urban plan.

In 2006 he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies with Forza Italia, then Popolo delle Libertà. In 2009 he was again a candidate for mayor of Bari, defeated by the outgoing mayor Michele Emiliano. In 2018, when the Apulian Regional Council led by Emiliano renewed the board of directors of Acquedotto Pugliese, he was appointed president. The funeral chapel will be set up from 2pm this afternoon until 8pm, and from 8am to 10am tomorrow, in the council room of Palazzo di Città, open to all those who wish to pay their final farewell. The funeral will take place tomorrow, Saturday 30 March, from 10.30 am, in the Basilica of San Nicola.

Protagonist of many important Telebari broadcasts, with him our station began to broadcast the service column that puts the mayor in direct contact with citizens. The editorial staff, management and publisher of Telebari rallied around his family.

THE REACTIONS

Hi Simeon! Simeone Di Cagno Abbrescia, the Mayor of a beautiful and exhilarating political-administrative period in the city of Bari, has passed away. When I was Councilor of his council I lived with him the years of radical change in Bari from an urban, cultural and ethical. He had great entrepreneurial, administrative and human qualities. Bari will not forget you,” the senator wrote on Facebook FdI Filippo Melchiorre. “I express my condolences and that of all of Forza Italia Puglia for the passing of Simeone Di Cagno Abbrescia. Our deepest condolences go to his family, to his loved ones”, declares the regional commissioner of Forza Italia, the Honorable Mauro D’Attis.

“The passing of Simeone Di Cagno Abbrescia saddens me deeply. Despite our political confrontations we had become friends and with him we continued to dream of the future of Bari and Puglia. He was an absolute protagonist in the history of the city of Bari, beloved mayor, parliamentarian of the Republic, visionary entrepreneur, far-sighted public manager, a man of extraordinary human and professional qualities. Simeone di Cagno Abbrescia leaves many of us with significant and indelible memories. He was always a point of reference for the community and we will miss him dearly. May the most sincere and heartfelt closeness of the community of the Puglia Region and my personal one reach my wife, children and family members.” These are the words of condolence from the president of the Puglia Region Michele Emiliano.

“Today the city mourns the passing of Simeone Di Cagno Abbrescia, the first mayor elected by the citizens who governed the city from 1995 to 2004 and who will be remembered for the start of many urban transformations that changed Bari. Above all, I think of the beach of Pane e pomodoro and the Urban plan, which for the first time has returned attention and beauty to our old city – writes the mayor of Bari Antonio Decaro – Even though we held different political positions for a long time, I have always appreciated Simeone’s institutional style, elegance and that sincere love for Bari that united us beyond any affiliation. In recent years, then, we have spoken often: his attention to the city, to the construction sites and to the ongoing projects has never waned, and indeed I have always been able to count on his reports and his punctual and qualified advice. For some time, health problems had undermined his body but not his spirit. On behalf of the City of Bari and personally, the embrace and affection of an entire community reaches his family.”

“Goodbye to Simeone Di Cagno Abbrescia, the best mayor of our city”. Fabio Romito, regional councilor of the League, expresses his deep condolences. “With Simeone, a very different way of doing politics is disappearing from what we are used to today – declares Romito – a politics without social media, in which the role of mayors overlaps with that of influencers, a politics where appearance matters much more of substance.” “Simeone Di Cagno Abbrescia – the councilor still recalls – returned old Bari to the city, created a large part of the public works which are still the cornerstone of Bari today, and administered ensuring the economic and social well-being of the people of Bari”. Romito entrusts a final thought to the former mayor: “As I have always told you, Simeone, I grew up in your myth. Bari owes you a lot, and we will work to preserve your memory and to build the future by looking at the city with your eyes too. Goodbye, Mayor.”
