Among the finalists of the “Borgo dei Borghi 2024” competition there is also Petacciato, the Molise village famous for its dunes and the Martini landscape which still retains its authenticity.

In the province of Campobasso, on a hill 225 meters above sea level, stands the ancient village of Petacciato, from which you can admire a wonderful view of the sea. A lovely historic centre, a very interesting nature reserve and the tourist part of the marina make Petaccio one of the most beautiful villages in Molise for a family trip or trip.

The History of Petacciato

The origin of the village of Petacciato is not entirely clear. It is known that the area in which it stands was already inhabited in pre-Roman timeswhen it was conquered by the enigmatic people of Frentani.
Over the centuries the town was disputed by various peoples -Goths, Byzantines, Lombards, Angevins and Turks- e destroyed several times by violent earthquakes which led to the abandonment of the area. Only towards the middle of the 16th century did Petacciato become repopulated again thanks to settlements of people of Slavic origin.

Today it is one of the unmissable destinations for those visiting Molise, a region rich in wonderful historical and artistic places and also ideal for trekking lovers, thanks to the numerous routes along the ancient sheep tracks.

The historic center of Petacciato

The historic center of Petacciato is a concentration of medieval atmosphere, with its narrow, paved streets, stone walls and small squares. All dominated by Norman castle, which is located in the highest part of the village. The original nucleus of the castle dates back to the 11th century, but the building was destroyed and rebuilt several times, until in the 16th century, after yet another Ottoman attack, it was transformed into a typically Renaissance palace. Despite the further neo-Gothic details added during the 19th century, the medieval origin can still be seen especially in the access portal and in the corbels.

Another monument of Petacciato is the Church of Santa Mariain Apulian Romanesque style, dating back to 13th century. The high bell tower that flanks it is very suggestive and appears imposing when compared to the small façade of the church.

Not far from the center is the Petacciato Towera reminder of the coastal defense system against the Turkish threat. It was commissioned by Charles V in the 16th century and even if today it is in a less than optimal condition, it still represents a piece of history and a place worth visiting.

The beaches of Petacciato

Definitely one of the most attractive elements of Petacciato, the beaches in this area are, fortunately, never crowded. Here you will find light sandone thriving pine forest and waters so crystal clear that they have earned, in the past, the coveted Blue Flag recognition.

Part of the coast near the village is equipped with bathing establishments, but there are also free beaches. Beach 28 And Cala D’Or they are among the Petacciato beaches to visit.

For those traveling with their animals, since 2019 there is also one pet-friendly beach.

Foce del Trigno Naturalistic Area

Organizing beautiful nature walks is decidedly simple in Petaccio. Not far from the village there is, in fact, a naturalistic area that includes the middle and lower course of the Trigno river up to the Petacciato Marina. It is a place where the river and marine environments meet, creating a specific ecosystem, particularly favorable for avian fauna. In short, the ideal place also for birdwatching!

Cycle path up to Termoli

If you prefer cycling on your feet, know that one leaves from Marina di Petaccio beautiful cycle path that crosses the valley of the Sinarca river and arrives in Termoli.

THE 30km The route offers enchanting views of the hills and, in the right season, of the beautiful fields in bloom. A place to stop for a break is there Saracen Tower which is found along the river.

How to get to Petacciato

Getting to Petacciato does not involve great difficulties if you travel by car or train. The route is a little more complex for those who decide to book a flight. Here are the details:

  • In car: you can follow theRome-Naples motorway. After exiting at San Vittore, continue towards Venafro and at Isernia take the Fondo Valle Trigno. Once you exit at Termoli, continue following the signs for Petacciato. Alternatively, from Rome-Naples you can exit at Caianello to continue towards Venafro and then as above.
  • In train: you can go down there Termoli station and from here reach Petacciato with i connections by bus.
  • In airplane: the nearest airports are located in Pescara, Foggia or Bari. Once on land it is possible to rent a car or continue using the public transport available.
