GROSSETO. The investigations coordinated by the Prosecutor’s Office regarding the alleged illicit management of approximately 4 thousand tons of hazardous and non-hazardous waste, following which Monday 25 March the carabinieri have sealed the Santi Paola car demolition plant, involving a total of 21 suspects – mostly from the province – they have also led to a “side effect” that will not take long to manifest itself in the city.
Tow truck issue
When the military executed the preventive seizure decree issued by the judge for the preliminary investigations, in fact, they removed from the availability of the respective owners trucks and vans that would have been used for the illicit transports mentioned above; and tow trucks. The latter, in particular, would have been used to move vehicle carcasses from garages or workshops to Santi Paola. But they are the same ones who – it is literally their main function – take damaged cars off the streets. In this latter context, therefore, the precautionary measure reached the owners of six of the main companies in the city, which – paradoxically – carry out the service in agreement with bodies and law enforcement agencies. Result: eight vehicles at the depot and roadside assistance of the capital municipality in emergency itself. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, in fact, the transport of waste (and the carcass of a vehicle is waste) took place without registration in the appropriate national register of environmental managers.
The owners speak
We contacted some of the owners, who – requesting anonymity – explain that «in order to continue working, even if we have money, we will have to rent or buy second-hand vehicles, which are often “beasts” that consume more compared to what we would earn”; as well as, obviously, getting in order. There are also possible criminal responsibilities for each of them at stake, which is why they turned to their respective lawyers. Meanwhile the lawyer Alessandro Oneto of the Grosseto Court, which assists and represents Santi Paola, throws water on the fire: «In the last twenty years the property has turned to me for about ten similar processes, which arise by virtue of the complexity that regulates this matter and have always closed without any liability being recognized. My clients reserve the right to examine the documents and videos that the police claim to have filmed, and place their trust in the judicial system.”
The accusations and investigations

The various suspects are accused, in some cases, of false declarations in the appropriate forms, i.e. information regarding drivers, vehicles and times of deliveries to the car demolition plant. The investigations by the Carabinieri of the Environmental, Agri-Food and Forestry Police Investigation Unit (Nipaaf) would have reconstructed a 1.5 million euro “torn”, leading to 214 administrative sanctions for the absence of waste identification forms for a total of 700 thousand euros .
