With the arrival of spring the appointment with the Heritage Walkselaborate route program from the Florence World Heritage and Relations with UNESCO Office of the Municipality of Florence And MUS.E across the Florence Forma Continua project, with the aim of spreading the history of the city of Florence and promoting connections between the territory, the people and the heritage. Developed with the support of Heritage and Research Laboratory (HeRe Lab, joint laboratory between the Municipality of Florence and the University of Florence), the objectives of the Firenze Forma Continua project are the re-appropriation of the city fabric by the community and the transmission of its values to future generations.

Why patrimonial? Because they take place within, or close to, the Historic Center of Florence World Heritage site – or in the area defined as the Core Zone – whose perimeter, traditionally identified with the circuit of the ancient circle of the fourteenth-century walls which was expanded in 2021 until reaching San Miniato al Monte.

The itineraries, starting Saturday 30 March 2024will lead visitors to discover the lesser-known areas of the historic center, highly evocative architecture, views and stories of Florence and to deepen their knowledge of the city, the urban fabric and the landscape areas that contribute to the exceptional universal value of the site.

If, in fact, the Historic Center of Florence was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list because “a one-of-a-kind creation, a masterpiece of work, the result of continuous creation that has lasted for over six centuries“, its cultural enjoyment is too often limited to the main monuments and the most famous streets, failing to grasp the complex fabric of places, relationships and activities that is still ideally enclosed by the city walls: one of the most significant elements for understanding the historical evolution of Florence, full of references and curiosities.

And it is precisely from this perimeter – still today witnessed by the gates, towers, fortresses and walls of the Oltrarno, which have remained almost entirely intact – that three distinct heritage itineraries have been developed, centered on key areas of the history and life of Florence: path South, along the walls of Oltrarno “Rethinking the margin” (scheduled for March 30, April 7, 20 and 28, May 11 and 19), that north of the city, around Porta San Gallo “New traces of ancient relationships” (scheduled for March 31, April 13, 21, May 4, 12 and 25); and finally that around San Miniato al Monte (scheduled for April 6, 14, 27 and May 5, 18 and 26). With this last itinerary we also remember how the World Heritage site underwent a significant expansion in 2021, embracing precisely this area.
