Even the Union of the municipalities of the Dauni Mountains, which met yesterday afternoon in Bovino, said no, with its own resolution, to the construction of a sludge treatment plant in the locality of Ischia, on the border between the Puglia and Campania regions, in territory of Savignano Irpino.

It is the first citizen of the center of the Sub-Apennines, Stefania Russo, to explain the reasons for the no, but also the results obtained thanks to the mobilization of local communities and institutions: «by virtue of the grassroots mobilization in the municipality of Savignano and beyond, at involvement of Lipu with Enzo Cripezzi and the resolution of the municipality of Savignano which expresses opposition to the plant, the Special Environmental Assessment Office of the Campania Region forwarded today (yesterday, ed.) a note with which it communicates the activation of the Interregional impact assessment, with the involvement of the local Municipalities, the Puglia Region, the Province of Foggia and the restart of the procedure from the document improvement phase. A first demonstration of how we must never give in to rumours, it’s already done, it’s a losing battle”, says the first citizen with satisfaction, even if the tug of war is not over.

A struggle that starts from the intentions of the region led by Vincenzo De Luca to establish a plant in the Cervaro valley for the treatment of civil sludge with the production of composted soil improver and for the production of dried sludge from a waste-to-energy plant. A structure that should be created right where the local associations and institutions are preparing the procedures for the creation of the Cervaro Valley Regional Park.

A place already disfigured by the invasion of wind farms and which is struggling to regain its tourist and agri-food vocation: “areas with an enchanting landscape, unique biodiversity and rich in quality agricultural production which risk being permanently disfigured”, underlines Russo, while Pasquale Bizzarro, mayor of Deliceto and president of the Union of Monti Dauni, states that «the withdrawal by Campania gives us hope because it involves us in decisions and we are certain that we will be able to explain our reasons, thanks to decree 61 of 2007 which affirms the participation of local communities in these processes”.
