A special prize for the youngest bricklayer in Cesena

On the construction sites of Cesena today it is possible to meet, among the few “old” bricklayers from Romagna and the many “new” ones arriving from across the border, a young – very Italian – who has freely chosen to practice this still socially precious profession. He chose it because he considers it suitable for his aspirations, for his ideals; put more simply: because he likes being a bricklayer.

His name is Giovanni Fiore, he is 24 years old, he obtained a surveyor’s diploma with which he learned what construction is, at least from a theoretical point of view. Now he is putting into practice what he has learned, in order to be able to carry out this job in the best way, even in his various operational roles (carpenter, ironworker, scaffolder…) for which he is also aware of having to continue to do the necessary training.

This job largely satisfies him in terms of remuneration: his starting salary is certainly higher than that of many former schoolmates who chose to go to professional offices to “gain experience”. How much he will earn in the future will depend only on him and certainly not many years will pass before this young man, if he wants it, becomes a partner or even owner of a construction company.

«Unfortunately, we must note that very few young people today have the courage to make this choice. For this reason the “Committee of the Monument to the Bricklayer”, in the person of the president Vittorio Novelli, wanted to reward him with a parchment of thanks, very similar to the one it usually gives to long-time bricklayers during the traditional “Blayer’s Days”.
