FLORENCE. The 36-year-old worker who was crushed by a mechanical “spider” who was operating in a company in via Bellini in Le Sieci, a hamlet of Pontassieve, specialized in the recovery and treatment of ferrous material. Yet another tragedy at work occurred this morning around 8.30am when, for reasons yet to be ascertained, the man was crushed by the large vehicle used for lifting materials which suddenly overturned, overwhelming him as he was trying to get out of the driving cab. .
Transported in very serious conditions to Careggi hospital, the worker – originally from Pakistan – died in the late afternoon due to serious injuries and crushing trauma to the chest, which also resulted in two cardiac arrests, reported during the accident. According to an initial reconstruction, the lifting vehicle that the man was operating suddenly became unbalanced and the man attempted to get out of the driver’s cab, but ended up crushed by the crane.
The intervention and alarm were raised immediately by the other workers present in the company (about ten of those employed by the company) who, with a second vehicle, managed to free the man. Two 118 ambulances intervened on site. The firefighters were also alerted to lift the mechanical vehicle and allow the worker to be transferred to hospital, but they did not intervene because upon their arrival the worker had already been extracted and taken care of by healthcare personnel.
The 36-year-old was transported under code red to Careggi hospital, where he died in the late afternoon due to the severity of his injuries. The worker, who lived with his brother in the municipality of Pontassieve, had been hired by the company a couple of years ago and for about a year and a half he had been responsible for handling the ferrous material in the company’s yard using the mechanical “spider”. «A great worker», a former worker of the company remembers him. On site, in addition to the carabinieri and municipal police, the workplace safety and prevention operators of the ASL Toscana center also intervened to investigate the case, to reconstruct the dynamics of the accident and to ascertain any irregularities or anomalies. The vehicle was seized.
