There will also be a strike in Sicily, on the eve of Easter, for the workers of the companies belonging to the Federdistribuzione employers’ association. The unions Filcams Cgil, Fisascat Cisl and Uiltucs Uil, led by Giovanni Dalò, Giusi Sferruzza and Ida Saja, have organized a flash mob on Saturday morning at 9.30 in via Ruggero Settimo in Palermo and initiatives are planned in all the territories of the island.

Those who protest

Folding their arms for the entire work shift will be the employees of chain stores, franchising, wholesale, cash and carry and online shopping who have been waiting for 51 months (over four years) for their contracts to be renewed. Among the brands there are Acqua e soap, Arcaplanet, Bricocenter, Coin, Ovs, Douglas, Leroy Merlin, Casanova, Kiko, Lidl, Max&Co, Max Mara, Penny Market, Rinascente and Itx Zara group.

The reasons for the strike

“The long negotiation – declare Dalò, Sferruzza and Saja – which culminated on the night between 26 and 27 March, saw an employers’ association which attempted in every way to weaken the regulatory part of the contractual text which, if accepted as proposed from Federdistribuzione to the table, would have offended the professionalism of the many workers in the sector, in light of the obstinate attempt demonstrated by the employers regarding the lowering of existing classification levels, the assignment of pejorative tasks, the extremization of flexibility through an almost total liberalization of fixed-term contracts, which would have made the stabilization of permanent contracts and therefore stable work almost impossible, which is the objective always declared by Filcams, Fisascat and Uiltucs”.

And again: “Furthermore – the secretaries continue together – the inevitable breakdown of the table could not have had any other outcome if we consider the attempted denial of rights acquired over time by the workers of this important economic sector, a reason for which was the natural consequence of the proclamation of the national strike which will have to see the widest support in Sicily in order to form a common front in the face of a failure to renew the national collective agreement, which is now 51 months late, which is continuing to deny legitimate economic increases and regulatory improvements in a world of work and in an economy that has completely changed every scenario in recent years”.
