CORIGLIANO-ROSSANO (RC) – The “Theatre teaches” project ends
Descriptive text here

Theatre, memory, history and cinema meet and merge to give life to a series of initiatives that excite the students of the Luigi Palma Institute of Higher Education in Corigliano Rossano. This is how it is, thanks to the project “Il Teatro fa scuola” – created by “L’Altro Teatro” by Gianluigi Fabiano and Giuseppe Citrigno – that the children, together with their teachers, were the protagonists of a series of initiatives on the theme of the Shoah, with the aim of exploring this topic in depth by going beyond the pages of a book.

A single common thread: the theatrical language that helps to reflect and not remain indifferent to the story, managing to enter the hearts of the students and fight repression and oblivion.

The students of the “Luigi Palma” IIS of Corigliano Rossano participated in three theatrical performances, “In the wrong place – stories of children victims of the mafia”, “Voids of Memory” and “The Nazi Hunter”, and in a workshop on “ The audiovisual language in the Holocaust: Cinema and memory” held by the head of the project “Theatre teaches” Carmela Caligiuriteacher of audiovisual languages and visual education operator at school.

«We are proud to have taken part in these initiatives, certain of the importance of promoting theatrical activities and innovative teaching – states the school director Cinzia D’Amico – and culturally stimulating for our kids. With Voids of Memory and The Nazi Hunter we witnessed two theatrical performances that were different from each other, but which stimulated the students to reflect, recognizing the importance of preserving memory to prevent tragedies like the Holocaust from happening again.”

“Never forget, I trust you.” An extraordinary one Remo Girone brought to life, on the stage of the Cinema Teatro Metropol in Corigliano Rossano, the true story of Simon Wiesenthalthe man who, having survived five different extermination camps, managed to bring more than a thousand Nazi criminals to justice.

How could a man be capable of such brutality? This is what the director and actor from Cosenza asked himself several times Max Mazzotta which gave birth to “Vuoti di Memoria”. Using texts from William Shakespeare, Primo Levi, Elie Wiesel, Hermann Hesse, Friedrich Nietzscheexcerpts from original speeches by Hitler and Mussolini, five actresses told and experienced before the public the inhuman conditions of the vanquished and the victors, be they male or female.

«The objective of “Theatre makes school” – explains the project coordinator, Carmela Caligiuri – is to bring young people closer to and educate them about this world. The innovative aspect of the proposal consists in the combination of a laboratory day with the viewing of the theatrical show, aimed at transforming the position of the students from spectators to actors into a role-play in order to educate the children to be both users and authors of the artistic processes”.
