Mateo Reteguicenter forward of Genoa and the Italian national team, will become an honorary citizen of Sestri Levante, where he has family roots. In fact, his great-grandfather Angelo Podestà left from the municipality of eastern Tigullio, after the Second World War of the last century, to seek his fortune in Argentina, like many men and women from coastal Tigullio and its hinterland, who had set sail for South America since since the end of the nineteenth century.

The proposal, which arose at popular level after the brace scored by Retegui for the national team against Venezuela, was accepted by the councilors Diego Pistachios (SestriAmo) e Marco Conti (FdI) in an urgent motion presented today to the attention of the mayor Francesco Solinas.

According to Pistacchi and Conti, Retegui should be rewarded with honorary citizenship for the following reason: “In memory of his great-grandfather, Angelo Podestà, who emigrated from Sestri Levante in the 1950s like many other fellow citizens, the footballer Mateo Retegui today defends the colors of the Italian national team of football, declaring himself proud of the shirt and of his origins, thereby also representing a source of pride at an international level for the entire city of Sestri Levante and an example for the descendants of many Sestrini and Italians, who emigrated while always carrying their roots in their hearts” .
