the first test at the Nicchio

The race took place this evening, Saturday 29 June, with the horses leaving from the Entrance of the Cortile del Podestà in Piazza del Campo at 7.45pm, the first try of the Palio di Siena of July 2, 2024, dedicated to the Madonna di Provenzano, whose Drappellone that will go to the winning Contrada was created by the artist Giovanni Gasparro (go to the article).

The Palio di Siena race on 2 July 2024 was won by Contrada of the Nicchio with Elias Mannucci aka Turbine on Akida.

With all the mounts confirmed, theorder of entry between the ropes of the first test, according to article 62 of the “Regulations for the Palio”, followed the order in which the Contrade “were drawn by lot to participate in the Palio” (drawing order, also called trifora or flag order): Ram, Panther, Caterpillar, Unicorn, Wolf, Owl, Goose, Giraffe, Nicchio and Chase Wave.

In a Palio characterized by many debutants, six among the horses and, at the moment, two among the jockeys, there are two pairs of Contrade rivals who compete on the tuff of Piazza del Campo in the Palio di Provenzano on 2 July 2024: Owl-Leocorno e Valdimontone-Nicchio.

Regarding the lot of cavalli participants, there are only four who have already competed in the Palio, none of whom have won the Sienese career: Tobacco (6 Corsican Palios), Angel face (3 Corsican Palios), Ungaros (2 Palios run), Summer (1 Palio course). There are six debuting horses on the tuff of Piazza del Campo: Akida, Ardeglina, Ares Elce, Brivido Sardo, Criptha and Zenios.

These are the statistics of the ten jockeys who took part in the first trial of the Palio di Siena on 2 July 2024:

The chronicle of the first test
of the Palio di Siena of July 2, 2024

At the command of the starter Bartolo Ambrosioat the nineteenth presence on the verrocchio of Piazza del Campo, with the horses very calm between the ropes, the Onda di rincorsa immediately enters and the start of Giraffa, Bruco, Oca and Nicchio is excellent.

Nicchio takes the lead at the first San Martino followed by Bruco and Giraffa. Immediately after the horses slow down with the positions that will remain unchanged until the end of the test.

With a final lap at a very slow pace, in absolute calm, Elias Mannucci known as Turbine on Akida in the Nicchio thus he goes on to win the first round of the Palio di Siena on 2 July 2024.

Tomorrow morning, Sunday 30th June at 9am, the second test with the order of entry between the ropes which will be reversed compared to this evening: Onda, Nicchio, Giraffa, Oca, Civetta, Lupa, Leocorno, Bruco, Pantera and Valdimontone in pursuit.
