Not just Penelope and Colin. The couples’ games in the series are different. Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) returns to Mayfair with his wife Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) to announce happy news. Little Francesca (played by Hannah Dodd)for her part, is increasingly interested in Count John Stirling (Victor Alli), who reciprocates her feelings: when they realize they are made for each other, they make an important decision.

Bridgerton 3the review

The third season of the series yes, it focuses on love, but it goes one step further. It is perhaps the most feminist chapter of the Netflix series so far. The men act as a backdrop and everything revolves around female roles: women decisive, strong, independent, aware. Penelope is the first whose courage emerges. When she thinks she has no more hope with Colin, she brings out all her personality, pushes him away and thus gets what she has always dreamed of.

When Colin asks for her hand, her mother Portia (Polly Walker) encourages her to dedicate herself to her husband and his dreams. «And my dreams?», she asks. In that instant, he understands that he doesn’t want to give up his alter ego. Also Francesca she is a young woman who he knows what he wants. She rejects the suitor imposed on her by her family and chooses John Stirlinggoing against every convention and challenging prejudices. Cressida herself, who aspires to take possession of an identity that is not hers, does so because she dreams of freedom and self-determination.

In this sense Bridgerton 3 avoid the soap opera risk that love intrigues entail and also talks about something else: launches positive and feminist messages nestled between corsets and lace gloves. A necessary change of direction considering the first two seasons, especially given that Penelope is the central character of the entire series.

Reducing her role to just her engagement with Colin and the consequent happy ending would be banal and would take away the pathos of the story. It remains to be seen how the plot will evolve in the fourth season: Will Shonda Rhimes and her writers be able to keep the attention high? Or will the interest gradually wane? We’ll see.
