Mauro Corona reveals his vote in the European elections and, with hindsight, also tells us about one of his very personal regrets. Guest as usual on Bianca Berlinguer and her È semper Cartabianca on Rete 4, the mountaineer and writer talks about his election day. “The first idea, as I told you in the other episode, was not to go – explains Corona – because if my vote means trust in someone, I don’t have any trust. It would be false to vote for someone I don’t trust. I don’t have any.”
Despite this, however, “civic sense prevailed, as you taught me on Tuesday. And so I went to vote together with my daughter Tina. And I can also tell you who I voted for.” Berlinguer smiles with satisfaction and Corona’s indiscretion tickles her curiosity: “And who voted?” she asks. “I voted for Michele Santoro – admits the mountaineer – the column in the center at the top. There was this dove, dignity and peace. I tried there but I had no luck.” And after this first indiscretion, Corona admits his post-voting regret: “But I would have gladly voted also to have the imprisoned girl, Ilaria Salis, elected – he explains to Berlinguer – I almost regretted it because I could have given her a vote. Even with my daughters.” “But why did he vote for Santoro? Why is he against the war? Berlinguer asks him. The answer is clear: “I always had a liking for Santoro when he hosted famous television programs – he says -. I voted for him to try to provide something new. He is someone who wants peace, the dignity of being in this world.”
Berlinguer returns to the regretted Salis: “So did you like those 176 thousand preferences that Ilaria Salis received?”. The writer replies: “Well, in fact, I feel guilty for not having added one too or more than one with my children – he explains – now let’s hope that he will obtain immunity for the current legislature and that he can do his job” . Corona who then closes his thoughts by focusing on Salis’s next commitments in the European Parliament: “Many think that it was voted to remove her from prison, I hope that she gets out soon but above all that she does her work in favor of prisoners, prisons – underlines the writer –. We have the worst prisons in Europe, stuff from under Mexico. So this will be her task ”.
