A pregnant woman he tried to wake up the company but in vain: the man was died. Thomas Gibson, 40, had fallen asleep on the sofa at home the night before and never woke up again. Rebecca Moss, his partner, told him “wake up, it’s baby’s day” touching him and found a “cold and stiff” body. A few hours later, the woman gave birth to their daughter Harper in a scheduled caesarean section at the hospital. Gibson suffered cardiac arrest after a hospital doctor misread an x-ray taken eleven days earlier.

Moss attempted to wake Gibson around 5:15 a.m. and realized he wasn’t breathing. The emergency number told her to perform first aid procedures, which she did, but to no avail. Gibson would have been thrilled to become a father, so much so that he spent every weekend building furniture for their little girl. Now “we say goodnight to the photo of her every night before going to bed,” she told the BBC, “and Harper has a quilt made from her father’s favorite sweaters.

The medical investigation

The inquest heard that Gibson attended Wythenshawe Hospital A&E in Manchester on May 27, 2023 after suffering from severe stomach pain for around three weeks. A newly licensed physician recognized a potential cardiac abnormality on examination but did not think it was clinically significant in the absence of other symptoms. Investigations revealed that it was an arrhythmia which can lead to sudden cardiac arrest. The hospital admitted it had made a mistake in the diagnosis. Dr Matthew Thornber, a consultant at the hospital, said the condition required expertise to spot.
