The Three-Body Problem has not yet been renewed for a second season, despite the multitude of loose ends left by the first 8 episodes. One of the numerous questions that have gripped the public is linked todisturbing and anxiety-inducing countdown which we have been witnessing since episode 1. What does it mean?
Warning, spoilers will follow from now on. Doctor Auggie Salazar is the first of the main characters to see the countdown. The latter materializes before the scientist’s eyes in a moment of leisure, while she is in a bar with Jin Cheng. Auggie is the only one who sees this glowing countdown, which will expire just 4 days later. Obsessed by her vision, the girl meets a mysterious woman: she too is aware of the countdown and warns the scientist, explaining that the only way to stop it is to definitively give up the important research on nanofibers that Auggie is carrying out with the team her. The scientist obeys and the luminous writing disappears: we will discover, later, that it will reappear every time she decides to resume work where it was interrupted.
But what would happen once zero was reached? Probably nothing, and the spectacular conclusion of episode 5 explains it to us. The main aim of the alien population of the San-Ti is to settle on our planet in the best conditions and with the fewest possible obstacles: instill fear and paranoia in mankind it is functional to gradually dismantle the possibility of achieving new scientific progress, the same ones that could separate aliens from achieving their goal. And so we arrive at the important role played by the sophons in The 3-body problem: it is precisely these two super-computers the size of a proton that are the means through which the Saints sow anguish on the Earth, generating the numerous inexplicable (and deceptive facts) witnessed by the protagonists, including the countdown.
