An emerging need for many Italians is that of a general practitioner psychologist: a new figure who could support the family doctor.

Health, for almost half of Italians (48%), is a complex balance that involves both the body and the mind. This holistic vision of health emerges clearly from the latest edition of the ‘Change Lab, Italia 2030’ Observatory, created by Groupama Assicurazioni in collaboration with BVA Doxa. The research highlights how over half of the population (52%) declare themselves satisfied with their physical and psychological state of health, placing great emphasis on prevention.

The report highlights one growing attention towards preventive practices: 66% of those interviewed regularly carry out blood and urine tests; almost half follow screening courses and 44% practice physical activity regularly. However, for only 16% of survey participants, the general practitioner remains the only point of reference in the healthcare sector. This demonstrates a trend towards a broader approach to personal care, which also includes specialists such as nutritionists and psychologists.

Basic psychologist: a concrete request

Among the needs not yet fully satisfied by the national health system, the one relating to health stands out figure of the “basic psychologist”, desired by 35% of those interviewed. This professional figure should support family doctors in taking care not only of the physical appearance but also of the psychological well-being of patients.

The survey projects a look at the future of health in Italy, anticipating significant changes in citizens’ habits and expectations by 2030. Among the main concerns that emerged is that relating to the worsening of physical conditions without access to the necessary care (42%) . It fits into this context the need expressed by six out of ten Italians for greater digitalisation of healthcare services.

The Observatory highlights how in the next decade professional figures such as the psychologist, the nutritionist and the physiotherapist/osteopath will take on an increasingly central role in the field of health. These professions will be considered fundamental “allies” in the management of individual well-being, demonstrating the evolution of the concept of health itself towards a more inclusive and integrated vision.

The integration of the psychologist in the family doctor team represents a concrete response to emerging needs in the healthcare sector. Italy seems ready to welcome this innovation as an integral part of a healthcare system that aims to guarantee not only treatment but also prevention and maintenance of the general state of well-being of citizens.
