Over 600 days positive for Covid. Almost two years of agony. In the end, the 72 year old Dutch, who fought strenuously against the disease, did not survive. The elderly patient is died in October 2023but her case has suddenly become topical again thanks to a student who will speak about it at the ESCMID Congress.

The case of man represents a real one record: he would in fact be the patient who remained positive for Covid for the longest time in the world. He came in hospital in Amsterdam in February 2022 until he died in October 2023: 613 days in total. No registered patients arrived at 20 consecutive months of illness; behind the man another case reached 505 days in a row. Medical student Magda Vergouwe, from the University of Amsterdam Medical Center in the Netherlands, will present the 72-year-old’s case at ESCMID Global Congress.

The case has aroused particular interest also due to the health conditions of man. According to what the doctors explained, the patient had a serious illness deficiency of white blood cells and a very compromised immune system due to the cancer. The Covid virus, which could not be eradicated from the organism, has mutated countless times to continue to proliferate within man, so much so that there was talk of a supervariant developed only by him.
