This year’s global economic competitiveness ranking, published byInternational Institute for Management Development (IMD), evaluates 67 economies based on more than 250 indicators in four broad categories: economic performance, government efficiency, business efficiency and infrastructure.

The indicators are a mix of concrete statistical data, which represent two-thirds of the final ranking, and the perceptions of over 6,000 executives, which represent the remaining third of the results. As Statista’s chart shows, the ranking covers much of Europe and North America, leaving some blind spots in Latin America, Asia and, most importantly, Africa, with only four African economies rated this year.

As in previous years, Europe dominates the competitiveness ranking with six European economies in the top 10, including three in the top 5. While Asia also has three economies in the top 10, its largest economies China, India, Japan and South Korea are absent. However, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong achieved the highest scores in the region, with the first of the three topping this year’s ranking.

The Italian performance does not shine according to the economic efficiency ranking of the IMD World Competitiveness Center. Italy, in fact, occupies position number 42, also surpassed by Spain and Poland. Out of 67 countries, ours is in 58th place for employment. Italy was in 44th place for economic efficiency, 37th position for business efficiency and 30th for infrastructure.
