Covid monitoring. Incidence and hospitalizations always stable at very low levels

As of 03/27/2024, the occupancy of beds in the medical area was 1.2% (754 hospitalized), a slight decrease compared to the previous week (1.4% as of 03/20/2024). The Rt index always below the epidemic threshold. Those most at risk are confirmed to be those over 80. THE REPORT

29 MAR

Always below one thousand new cases in the last week. The impact of Covid is confirmed to be limited. As of 03/27/2024, the occupancy of beds in the medical area was 1.2% (754 hospitalized), a slight decrease compared to the previous week (1.4% as of 03/20/2024). The occupancy of intensive care beds was stable, at 0.3% (25 hospitalised), compared to the previous week (0.3% as of 03/20/2024). This is what emerges from the monitoring of the ISS and the Ministry of Health

Hospitalization and mortality rates are higher in the older age groups (hospitalization rate in the 80-89 and >90 age groups equal to 7 and 8 respectively per 1,000,000 inhabitants and mortality rate in the 80-89 age groups and >90 years equal to 2 per 1,000,000 inhabitants; no new admissions to intensive care were recorded in the week of observation.

Diffusion
The transmissibility index (Rt) calculated with data updated to 27 March 2024 and based on cases with hospitalization, as of 03/19/2024 is below the epidemic threshold, equal to 0.63 (0.51–0.76) , decreasing compared to the previous week (Rt=0.88 (0.75–1.02) as of 03/12/2024).

The incidence of COVID-19 cases diagnosed and reported in the period 03/21/2024 – 03/27/2024 is equal to 1 case per 100,000 inhabitants, stable compared to the previous week (1 case per 100,000 inhabitants in the week 03/14/ 2024 – 20/03/2024).

The weekly incidence (21/03/2024 – 27/03/2024) of diagnosed and reported cases is substantially unchanged in most Regions/PPAA compared to the previous week. The highest incidence was reported in the regions of Umbria and Veneto (1.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and the lowest in Basilicata and Molise, where no new cases were reported in the week of observation.

The age group that records the highest weekly incidence rate is the >90 age group. The weekly incidence is stable in most age groups. The median age at diagnosis is 61 years, stable compared to the previous week. The percentage of reinfections is approximately 41%, decreasing compared to the previous week.

Variants Based on sequencing data available in the national I-Co-Gen platform (data as of March 25, 2024), JN.1 (descendant of BA.2.86) currently represents the predominant variant. Among the different sub-lines identified, the parental JN.1 appears to be the most frequent.
