Before you hook up, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds are great friends. And they remember all too well the way they met, 17 years ago now. Here’s what the Deadpool & Wolverine stars had to say about their first meeting!

As it is known, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman they are long-time friends, but few know where and how the two stars they met. It was those directly involved who told it to the microphones of People.
Let’s go back to 2009, on the set of the film X-Men Origins – Wolverine. For Ryan Reynolds it wasn’t just the first time in the shoes of Wade Wilsonbut also one of very first important productions in which he was cast. The actor arrived on set, a Sydneyconfused and excited: he had only been confirmed in the cast ‘two or three weeks before’.
The film industry came from Screenwriters’ strike of 2007-2008, which had frozen many films in the writing phase. Just like what happened recently with the SAG-AFTRA strike. Therefore, the role of Deapool in the economy of the story it was still undefined.
It simply read: ‘Deadpool/Wade Wilson comes, says funny things, keeps talking, doesn’t stop.’ I was basically just told to pull the rope on my back and go. I don’t actually improvise as much as I write. I’ll write 10 options for one joke or five options. I don’t have that Robin Williams gift where you can just throw it out there and it will work.
Hugh Jackman, before letting his friend go on, he pointed out that he didn’t agree. “I’ve seen what you write, and it’s true. But if they throw something at you, you improvise like no one else.” In any case, that was precisely the day when Reynolds and Jackman came face to face for the first time. “My jaw dropped. And I was nervous as hell,” Ryan confessed. “I was walking through the trailers, jet lagged, disoriented, nauseous, and feeling like a fish out of water. It was just like, what’s going to happen? ?”
It was enough for Jackman to call him from afar and show him a warm welcome to immediately make him feel better.
I heard my name, ‘Ryan!’, among these trailers as I walked. And it was you. Just the fact that you knew my name meant so much to me. And you came up to me and hugged me tight and said, ‘Welcome aboard. It will all be fine. We’ll make you feel comfortable.’
Reynolds says he learned a lot on that first set alongside his fellow Aussie. “I learned so much about what it means to direct a set by watching you – he admitted – What it means to be kind not only to the people who can change your destiny, but to everyone. I saw you learn the names of every member of the crew, have a dialogue constructive with every single part of that crew and those people. Everyone around you felt so respected.”
That moment marked the beginning of a private and professional partnership which today is stronger than ever. The secret? Always being able to count on each other for honest advice. The two, in fact, enjoy spending time together. Jackman says Reynolds is ‘an incredible listener’ to whom he can tell everything without fear of being judged. “I think the secret sauce to a lasting friendship in Hollywood is not too dissimilar to having a partner or a marriage,” Reynolds said.
“I sincerely root for you, always. I want you to win-she echoed the face of Wolverine – And I feel the same way about Blake [Lively, ndr]. Because I’m rooting for her, I know she’s rooting for me, and that’s why we’re so close.”
