It’s certainly not a name we hear often, and it’s normal that we associate it directly with him: Keanu Reeves however it is called that for a very specific reason, which he had told years ago during an interview.
Several years ago Keanu Reeves was a guest on David Letterman’s show, who during the episode apologized to him for having mispronounced his name (calling him Kenu instead of Keanu). At that point the presenter explicitly asked him if his name had a deeper meaning perhaps in another language.
“I was told it means cool breeze in the mountains” Keanu Reeves replied “and that comes from a great-great uncle of mine, since the name has Hawaiian origins”. In fact, Keanu’s father, the geologist Samuel Nowlin Reeves Jr., has Hawaiian but also Chinese and Portuguese origins. Her mother, however, Patricia Taylor, dancer and costume designer, was born in Essex, England.
In all of this Keanu Reeves was also born in Beirutin Lebanon, but lived mostly in Canada during his adolescence.
In Hawaiian anyway Keanu is a shortening of Keaweaheuluwhich can be translated as “light breeze that rises (from the sea towards the mountains)”, the so-called sea breeze.
