Gabriel Garko doesn’t bat an eyelid. Alpha male of the Mediaset feuillettons of the early 2000s – trademark: turgid lips and sculpted abdominals – his last time as an actor was in 2017, with a cameo in the last episode of the less successful Il bello delle donne… a few years later . Since then, complicated years: coming out to Big Brother in 2020, the Ares Gate storm in 2022 (the bankruptcy of the production company he had worked for), thyroid problems, body shaming, the suicidal thoughts confessed to Beasts. However, he doesn’t bat an eyelid. From tomorrow, for three evenings, he will return as the protagonist on Canale 5 with Anna Safroncik in the fiction “If I could say goodbye” by Simona and Ricky Tognazzi, the story of a man suffering from amnesia treated by a recently widowed doctor. «You will see me in a different, more modest way», she explains. «I have often played self-confident characters, here you will see my fragility. I was waiting for a role like this.”

Gabriel Garko at Verissimo, how he was and how he became: who he is. Age, coming out, boyfriend, illness, private life and career

As well as?
«A fascinating character, the right direction, a companion like Anna. Before the role, the team convinced me.”

Did he prepare in any way, did he study?
«But no, it was easy: go on set and act forgetful. There was a script, but we transformed it day by day. I also improvised. Never been so free.”

Do you think you’re a better actor today?
«Certainly in these years I have never stopped studying, reading and documenting».

On set after years: nervous?
«I felt great. As if time had never passed.”

But it’s in the past: why?
«I decided it. I wasn’t looking for a break from the sets, but a short break. Then, in the middle, Covid got in the way. I started at 16 and have always worked. I wanted to stop, understand where I had arrived.”

Do you regret any mistakes?
“By moving away I haven’t given up anything and I don’t deny anything about the past.”

What has he done in recent years?
«I put the personal pieces back together. Professionally I’ve been there. I did
Dancing with the Stars, I wrote two books.”

Have you ever thought: “I’ll give up everything and start over”?
“No. I like my job too much. Mine was an internal, personal search. I gave different things to the public: I showed myself without a mask, without characters. Just me. I feel like people liked me.”

Do you feel changed?
«I feel more serene and calm. Even more confident than me.”

Fear of being forgotten?
«The risk was there and still is: we will find out tomorrow if the public remembers me. While waiting, I have a pretty pit in my stomach.”

How does the “anta” live?
«After passing the fifty mark, now I feel like I’m 15. I’ve found my light-heartedness again».

How did he do?
«Putting real people next to me, who are with you not because you pay for their dinner but because they love you. In recent years I have made a great selection among my friends.”

Was her beauty a help or a hindrance to her credibility?
“He helped me. And she still helps me. I’m not one of those actors who makes himself look ugly to be more credible.”

Would he do it?
«If the script arrived, yes. They tell me I have the right skills for comedy.”

New goals?
«Many objectives, none, because the goal implies an end. I have some things in the works, but nothing signed yet. And then I want to finish getting my flight license”

Who does he say thank you to?
“Sincerely? To myself”
