“Some asked me if I wanted to direct – he explained – My answer was: ‘I would never do it. I could never do anything like what Martin Scorsese does. Why should I do it?’” Despite having worked with some of the greatest in the industry, therefore, the star is convinced that directing is not for him. We can’t blame him on Scorsese, a giant of Hollywood who wrote the history of cinema. Not even for an experienced professional would it be easy to reach the peaks touched by the author of Taxi Driver e Shutter Island. Fans will have to settle for seeing the duo reunite for their seventh collaboration, an adaptation of the novel What Happens at Night.

Although he has made it clear that he won’t be moving into directing (or, at least, not anytime soon), DiCaprio admits that he would have liked to take a step back, during some of his past films, and look more closely at Scorsese’s work behind the camera. In fact, over the course of their very long working history, the Oscar winner spent most of his time immersed in acting. In this regard, as reported Varietystated that, in the future, he would like to spend more time studying the director’s work.

I’ve been so focused on what I’ve done as an actor [ride]: You make these decisions, you play these characters, you try to get as deep into their soul as possible. I would have liked to be much more of a voyeur, watching what you do [si rivolge a Scorsese, ndr] behind the camera.

Leo explained that the debates with ‘Marty’ (as he calls him) have a crucial role in understanding the character at play, and that the preparation for their seventh collaboration was one of the most intense experiences ever.

I think that’s largely been our process, working together… the ability to have a debate for months. So many questions, so much playing devil’s advocate about how to approach situations that may not be the most obvious direction. We’re doing that now with the new film, and it’s been one of the most profound learning experiences by far.

Finally, the actor pointed out that working with Scorsese is one of the things he is most proud of in his life: “I grew up watching films from an early age, with the desire to become an actor. My father took me to see Marty’s works, along with those of Mr. [Robert] De Niro, and he said to me, ‘If there’s anyone you’d like to commit to working with in your career, now that you have the opportunity to make films, it’s this gentleman.’”
