starting from less than 20,000 euros

With the year 2026 approaching, we wanted to try to understand what they are the 5 best diesel cars to buy. Diesel-powered cars are disappearing more and more, but they still remain cars with excellent mechanics, long-lasting and with an enviable range.

We have divided them into categories starting from what in our opinion is the best diesel SUV on the market, read the Audi Q3 Sportback, car officially unveiled last summer. The model we are referring to is precisely the TDI 110 kW S tronic Business, the entry-level model, which costs, barring promotions, 45,800 euros. We are talking about an SUV that features a 2.0-liter engine with 150 horsepower with a maximum torque of 360 Nm, capable of reaching 208 km/h. Consumption is very interesting, between 5.3 and 5.5 liters of diesel per 100 kilometres, for CO2 emissions close to 140 grams per kilometre.

Let’s stay at Audi for the best diesel sedan, read l‘A6which like the Q3 was recently renewed during 2025. The entry-level model is the Business TDI 150 kW S tronic for 69,350 euros, which is equipped with a 2.0-litre engine boosted to 204 horsepower with a maximum torque of 400 Nm. It reaches 100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds while the maximum speed is close to 250 km/h with consumption equal to 4.9-5.1 l/100km.

If you wanted a car that was a little more “modest”, a Segment C, we can think of one Volkswagen Golfprecisely the 2.0 TDI SCR Life model for 34,700 euros. It features a 2.0-liter 115 horsepower engine that consumes only 4.3 liters of diesel per 100 km, one of the most efficient diesels on the market.

Also watch out for the off-road vehicle par excellence, the Toyota Land Cruiser, a true legend of 4 wheels. In the latest version it has been updated with the new 2.8-liter diesel MHEV with 204 horsepower. Its consumption is not very low, we are talking about 10.2 liters of diesel per 100 km, but in any case we are referring to a car almost 5 meters long with a weight of more than 2.3 tonnes. It will take you to the end of the world but at what price? Not for all budgets, starting from 86,000 euros for the 2.8L diesel 48V MHEV Adventure A/T.

Let’s close with what is at the moment the cheapest diesel on the market, the Fiat Tipo. With its legendary 1.6-litre 130 horsepower Multijet engine, it guarantees consumption in the order of around 5 liters per 100 km, but above all a very low price: 18,200 euros list price, always on offer at 16,200 euros.
