After having seen the advice on how to make a car last for more than 600,000 km, we welcome on this page another opinion from an expert mechanic, this time intended to clarify the sistema Start&Stop.
This is a feature that has always divided the experts and which some define as dangerous. Precisely for this reason the Spanish mechanic Morad decided to publish a video (which you can find below) to try to clarify things a little.
The Start&Stop system is located on cars for years and allows a motorist to turn off the engine by putting it in neutral when stopped at traffic lights or in a queue. By doing so, carbon dioxide emissions and fuel consumption are reduced, resulting in a car being more efficient and cleaner.
But is it really like that? According to Morad, the answer seems to be negative. “The Start&Stop system – specifies the mechanic – was created for CO2 emissions certifications. Therefore, it is designed to be able to sell cars with Euro 6, Euro 5 or any other certification. When using a car with Start&Stop, the life of the starter motor is reduced, because it is not designed to constantly start the engine”.
The expert adds that, in his opinion: “The Start&Stop system must be deactivated as soon as you get into the car. For cars with Start&Stop and intelligent alternator, which changes phase so that the car can start using the same alternator belt, it is equally bad. You are subjecting the entire engine to unnecessary strain with a single component, the alternator, which sometimes costs up to 2,000 euros”.
A decidedly negative opinion that of Morad, who recommends deactivating the device. We remind you that among the advantages of Start&Stop, in addition to those listed above, there is also a less noise pollution. The disadvantages are instead linked to greater wear of the starter motor and battery, a reduction in fuel which can be minimal, especially on long journeys. But also possible vibrations when restarting or a delay in restarting the car, finally, the possibility that the system does not always work properly in case of slightly extreme temperatures or when there is a high demand for electricity: the choice is yours whether to use it or not.
