Lotito’s club has asked in a five-point letter for the intervention of the Serie A League to promote “an urgent institutional table with the involvement of the FIGC and the competent referees, aimed at an operational discussion on the application criteria and critical issues encountered”.
Simonelli’s reply
Speaking on Radio Anch’Io Sport, Simonelli said: “We will respond as we do to all communications of various types that come from the clubs, Pec or non-Pec, after having analyzed them in the inappropriate places. I don’t agree with the fact that the credibility of the championship is undermined. It is not my task to discuss the technical facts. Last night I had the opportunity to hear from the designer Rocchi for the good wishes of the new year and he told me that tomorrow evening on Open Var there will be a wide and detailed explanation on the goal contested by Lazio. As president of the League, I can only confirm the total trust in the referees’ work: questioning it strongly undermines the credibility of the system and is not tolerable.”

According to Simonelli “it may be that a club feels damaged by some episodes, but as we know refereeing errors are part of the game of football as are the errors of attackers, defenders and goalkeepers and as such must be accepted without prejudice. If it is then believed, as written in the letter, that it is “a sequence of episodes which, due to frequency, nature and impact, can no longer be archived as randomness” then the matter is different. If it is claimed that there is a plan behind it, the path is that of reporting to the headquarters competent”.
