When we talk about hypercars we enter a world of dream cars with prohibitive prices for mere mortals. Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren Pagani and Lamborghini are some of the names that dominate in this sector and a car from the Sant’Agata Bolognese company, the very rare Lamborghini Veneno Roadster, has established an unusual record in recent days.

An auction sale at staggering figures

Before going into the details of this story it is good to remember which object we are talking about. The Lamborghini Veneno – whose name, as per the company’s tradition, takes that of a bull – is one car made in a very limited edition from the Emilian manufacturer. The car, or rather the hypercar, was created in just 9 examples in the Roadster version and just 4 in the coupé variant.

The design of the Lamborghini Veneno is exaggerated as only Lamborghinis can be. The lines created by the company’s style center are extreme and futuristic and absolutely do not hide the car’s bellicose intentions. Under the bonnet, then, lies one of the jewels of the manufacturer from Sant’Agata Bolognese: the 750 HP V12 without electrification which made the history of the brand and capable of making the Veneno reach a maximum speed of 355 km/h.

Despite its exceptional numbers, limited run and resulting rarity, the record-breaking Lamborghini Veneno Roadster struggled to find a buyer. For a few years, in fact, it was put up for sale by the VIP Motors dealership in Dubai at a price of 9.5 million dollars, but no one ever came forward despite the car being characterized by the exclusive satin black color with green reflections.

The first auction failed

The history of the Lamborghini Veneno Roadster has been quite troubled and the relationship between the creation of Sant’Agata Bolognese and the auction houses has been conflictual. In February 2020, in fact, the car was put up for sale by RM Sotheby’s and it was thought that collectors who often attend auctions would have shelled out between 4.5 and 5.5 million euros to put the car in the garage of their dreams. exclusive piece signed Lamborghini.

Actually also on the occasion of this event the Lamborghini Veneno Roadster remained unsold despite the car, previously owned by a member of the Saudi Arabian royal family, being the second example to roll off the assembly lines of the Emilian factory.

The intervention of SBX Cars, the online auction platform dedicated to extraordinary cars, proved providential. The sales process concluded last May and also on this occasion the Lamborghini Veneno Roadster remained unsold. At the end of the event, however, the auction house negotiated directly with the highest bidder and the agreed sales price was 6 million dollars.

In this case the amount paid marked a real record for online auctions, while among traditional sales channels the Toro cars have often achieved staggering figures as in the case of the destroyed Lamborghini Countach used by Leonardo Di Caprio in the famous film “The Wolf of Wall Street“.

In that case the iconic supercar of the 80s was offered at a much lower price than that paid for the Veneno, 1.5 million dollars, but it should be underlined that the white Countach was reduced to a pile of rubble compared to the limited edition hypercar. Mysteries of high-level collecting.
