sales too low, drastic decision

Stellantis may be forced to make a truly drastic decision for its future. Here’s what it is.

Stellantis is one of the most relevant and important companies in the global automotive industry. The group, which originated from the union of FCA and PSA, has a truly extraordinary range of renowned companies incorporated within it. Also for this reason, the expectations linked to this company are always very high.

However, Stellantis also evidently has its problems, and as proof of this, here is the official stoppage of the company. This decision, which directly concerns our country, was apparently taken due to too low sales

Stellantis, drastic decision: what’s happening

It has often been talked about Gigafactory in Termoli, which however could now come to a sensational halt. The reason is linked to the stoppage suffered by the battery factory project which should have been built in Kaiserslautern in Germany. Second Rheinpfalzlocal newspaper, ACC – consortium created by Stellantis, Mercedes Benz and Total – would have decided not to continue in that direction, opening a window for Italy.

Second Handelsblattthe general secretary Matthieu Hubert would have stated that this choice is linked to the difficulties of the electric car market in Europe, but also to the exaggerated prices of the materials available. The same problems could cause the Termoli project to also stall, as reported by ClubAlfa. It is necessary to quickly arrive at a solution that can allow the creation of sustainable products from an economic point of view, research in this sense is fundamental. Any decision is therefore postponed to the next few months.

Gigafactory Termoli, because it shouldn’t blow up

The fate of the Gigafactory in Termoli, Molise, is therefore still in the balance. ACC intended to occupy an area of 1.2 million square meters and produce as many as 40 GWh; furthermore, the factory was expected to employ around 2,000 workers by 2030. As for the production of batteries, it should be carried out in this way: first the chemical process, then the mechanical one, the electrical treatment and finally the assembly.

The installation of more than 400 machines for processing the product in question is expected, without considering the clean rooms and the control of the quantity of particles in the air, temperature and humidity. The staff had to wear special clothes and be subjected to special cleaning procedures (think of air showers). The production of the first two blocks should have been 60 million cells per year. At the moment, however, we have reached a very delicate stalemate phase. In the case of the Italian Gigafactory, a definitive stop would be a very hard blow for the Italian automotive industry to digest.

The Termoli project, in fact, represents an extraordinary opportunity for Italy to be a protagonist in the future of four wheels and electric vehicles. Doing nothing about it, therefore, would represent an economic, automotive and above all programming disaster (especially considering how Italy is already struggling to achieve great results on the electricity side). We’ll see how things end. Hoping that for the Italian Gigafactory the end credits won’t arrive before the film even starts.
