«Il Bel Paese», conversations on Antonio Stoppani’s book two hundred years after its birth

A conversation about book «The Bel Paese», by Antonio Stoppani two hundred years after his birth (1824-1891). June 27th at 6pm the Dante Alighieri Society hosts a conversation between the Secretary General at Palazzo Firenze in Rome Alessandro Masi and the professors Stefano Bruno Galli, Paola Mattei And Anna Giorgi on the contents of the book. The appointment is in Piazza di Firenze 27.

New Einaudi edition

«The speakers – report from the Dante Alighieri Society – will discuss the masterpiece of nineteenth-century scientific popularisation “The Bel Paese. Conversations on the natural beauty, geology and physical geography of Italy” by Antonio Stoppani, recently republished by Einaudi edited by Walter Barberis».

The light shape

«On the basis of Dante’s verses – continue from the Society – “the beautiful country where the yes sounds” (XXXIII canto of theHell), the 1875 book discloses scientific contents with the light shape of conversations between an uncle and his nephews which allowed it to reach a wide diffusion throughout the Peninsula”.

Beauty and identity

The author, abbot and pioneer of Italian geology, hoped that this work could teach «the inhabitants of those districts to appreciate themselves a little better and the beauties and favors of every kind of which nature, minister of God, was not stingy with the various provinces of Italy”, in the belief that the beauties of the Italian landscape were a founding element of national identity.
