A manual to defend creativity from the confusion produced by the advent of Artificial Intelligence. It was signed by the Arezzo illustrator Athos Boncompagni, technical-creative coordinator of the Studio Astra agency, who has created a real guide aimed at young professionals and students in the graphics sector aimed at providing an organic vision of the current digital revolution connected to the world of images and to propose a constructive methodology of approach towards new technologies. The book, entitled “The intelligent tool. Defending one’s creativity from the new Luddism against Artificial Intelligences”, was published by the Ledizioni publishing house and represents a unique example in the national panorama for the attempt to create a conscious and responsible approach towards the use of Artificial Intelligences among challenges, risks and opportunities . With over thirty years of professional experience, Boncompagni specializes in photography, graphics, illustrations for children, for advertising and publishing, as well as being a teacher at ISIA – Higher Institute for Artistic Industries of Florence for training in product and communication design. Artificial Intelligences constitute his most recent field of study to teach how to approach digital and how to maintain creativity despite changes in the market and technologies, with a path that found fulfillment in the writing of his first book “The intelligent instrument”. The proposed reflection starts from an analysis of the most common beliefs about Artificial Intelligences, then ranges between ethical and practical questions relating to the authenticity and originality of creative work, and finally provides an overview of practical and design applications. Boncompagni’s objective is to demystify the most common fears of those entering the design profession and to highlight how, on the contrary, these technologies can be important allies of creativity to generate innovative and functional solutions. The potential offered by the encounter between Artificial Intelligence and human capabilities is also developed by Boncompagni in the daily activity of Studio Astra at the service of companies involved in different sectors, structuring cutting-edge marketing, communication and advertising projects also supported by these technologies. «The advent of Artificial Intelligence in creative disciplines – explains Boncompagni – must be seen as a further extension of human capabilities to explore new opportunities. This technology, however, is often boasted, discredited or dismissed in the graphic field: the book aims to calm fears to help true creatives not to be scared and to lead them in the first steps towards conscious and responsible use. Artificial Intelligence and human creativity can in fact combine in the creation of images, bringing further added value to one’s professionalism and ideas.”
