The book
The song “Vitti ‘na crozza” is known for its catchy refrain and is often considered an anthem of Sicily. However, its origin dates back to the 1950s and is set in the terrible and inhuman atmosphere of the Sicilian sulfur mines. Sara Favarò performed an analytical study of the song, restoring the truthfulness of its origins and meaning. The author also reveals the name of its author and its composer. The latter had to fight for the recognition of the musical paternity of the song which was the subject of various textual and musical reworkings until the addition of “larallallerulallerulalà”, which sounds like an offense to the dignity of those who died in the belly of the earth. The first version of the song is the one that can be heard as the theme song for the film “The Path of Hope” by Pietro Germi.
