L’AQUILA – Lucia Annunziata, leader of the Democratic Party in the Southern constituency in the next European elections on 8 and 9 June, is in Abruzzo until tomorrow for a series of meetings with electors and voters.
The first took place yesterday afternoon in L’Aquila in the provincial headquarters of the CGIL and saw the former RAI president as the protagonist of a public initiative with the Abruzzo PD candidate Manola Di Pasquale.
Before the initiative there was a meeting with CGIL managers, members and militants. Annunziata wanted to listen to their requests and indications on territorial urgencies: unemployment, depopulation of internal areas, poverty, lack of health services, transport and infrastructure. Introduced by the regional secretary of the PD Daniele Marinelli, Di Pasquale reaffirmed “the need to have more Europe against the forces that want less of it. The objectives of the Union were and are peace, the creation of harmony between states and the economic development of its members. But also equality and the protection of minorities, things that sometimes someone forgets. Instead, we must support these values and I do so with conviction.”
Annunziata began by explaining: “I decided to take the field by looking at what is happening in the world. Having left Rai, I didn’t think about getting involved in politics but the events of recent times have convinced me to take action. I have lived in the Middle East and Russia, I know the areas where there is fighting today, it seemed right to me to do something.”
Then she continued: “I left Rai when I realized that the storm was coming, clearly saying that I didn’t like the climate that had been created. I lost a program that had lasted for 18 years, I lost visibility, but I preferred to take a break, then this government and its policies induced me to participate in politics. I don’t like the tools and tones of this government, I have chosen to use different tools starting from Europe. Elly Schlein offered me this possibility with a candidacy that I wanted to be civic, she wants to change things and this is important: the Democratic Party is the party in which one can be decisive”.
What model of Europe does Annunziata imagine? “We need to work at the roots of the Union’s crisis, rediscover the model that brought us this far and renew it, adapting it to the times. The EU left the management of the war to NATO and other forces, it was a removal of role that must be remedied. I see it this way, while the right would like a Europe of nations which is essentially a business committee.”
As for the topic of conflicts, the journalist observed: “Often in Italy things are said that are not true, especially about war. Everyone wants peace, the problem is how and with whom. We must make an extraordinary effort for peace, especially in Ukraine. But let’s also look at the Middle East: Israel is implementing a criminal tactic, I don’t know if it can be defined as genocide but it is certainly unjustifiable, just as Hamas is a terrorist group and must be dismantled.”
On the right: “This government has not taken and will not take its responsibilities for fascism. I cannot communicate with this right.” On Salis’ candidacy: “If she thinks it’s good for her, it’s right that she does it.”
