The statue of the breastfeeding woman, the work of Vera Omodeo, will be exhibited in the Senate from Tuesday on the proposal of Ignazio La Russa

There «statue of motherhood» by Vera Omodeo it will be exhibited from Tuesday 7 May in the Senate, in the Salone Garibaldi. The work, which depicts a woman breastfeeding a newborn baby, was initially intended to be sited in Piazza Duse in Milanbut it was «rejected» by the «commission of art experts for the evaluation of proposals for the placement of artistic artefacts in public spaces”, founded in 2015 with the then mayor Giuliano Pisapia and made up of municipal technicians and the Superintendence of Fine Arts. The experts unanimously agreed rejected the worksuggesting it placement in «a hospital or a religious institutewithin which the theme of motherhood is valorised, expressed with exquisitely religious nuances”.

In the Transatlantic of Palazzo Madama the bronze artefact entitled «From mother’s milk we come» – for now covered by a red cloth – is already ready for display and will be inaugurated on Tuesday. In Milan the controversy arose when the municipal commission led by mayor Beppe Sala, gave negative opinion to the location in Piazza Duse, in the Porta Venezia area, claiming that «the sculpture represents respectable but not universally shareable values by all the townspeople, which is why a favorable opinion is not given to the inclusion in a shared space.”

A stop in the name of politically correct which sparked the debate. Now it was the president of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa, who broke the deadlock and obtained it the work on loan for a monthchoosing to place it in plain sight, right near the entrance to the Senate Bar.
