Once the Cannes festival is over, when will the films arrive in Italy? While Roberto Minervini’s The Damned, awarded for best director at Un certain regard, and directly from the Marcello Mio Competition with Chiara Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve are already in theaters, the most awaited and discussed Italian film, Parthenope by Paolo Sorrentino, will arrive in cinemas in the fall, distributed by Piper films. Grand Tour by Miguel Gomes was released immediately, a feverish and dreamlike tale of love and travel around the world, awarded for directing. On May 30th the first part of the TV series – later broadcast on Sky – The art of joy by Valeria Golino will be released in cinemas. Kinds of Kindness by Yorgos Lanthimos is released on June 6, with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons awarded best actor.

And the others? The winner of the Palme d’Or, the sexy romantic comedy Anora by Sean Baker will be released by Universal. The film awarded with the Prix du jury and the award for female performances, Emilia Pérez by Jacques Audiard will be in theaters with Lucky Red, as will the raw and beautiful Bird by Andrea Arnold. Lucky Red has also acquired the distribution rights to The Seed of the Sacred Fig, the film by Mohammad Rasoulof which highlights the violent repression of demonstrations in Iran and points the finger at the climate of oppression, suspicion and repression that reigns in the country. I Wonder will bring to theaters The Substance, by Coralie Fargeat, with Demi Moore, winner of the award for best screenplay. Eagle will distribute Francis Ford Coppola’s colossal Megalopolis. Oh, Canada! will also be distributed in Italy. by Paul Schrader with Richard Gere, and The Apprentice by Abu Abbasi, a chiaroscuro portrait of Donald Trump. We will also be able to see Limonov by Kiril Serebrennikov. Lucky Red will also distribute Michel Hazanavicius’ animated Holocaust film, La plus precieuse des merchandises. Finally, it should be remembered that the Grand Prix film, the Indian All We Imagine as Light by Payal Kapadia, comes from the Torino Film Lab.

Paolo Sorrentino, meanwhile, comments in his own way on the fact that his film, Parthenope, left Cannes empty-handed: “Our task in the world is not to succeed, but to fail in the best possible state of mind”. He entrusts the comment to Instagram. Disappointment, if there is any, is masked by paradox, and by the taste for aphorism.
