VENICE – Neon sculptures suspended over water with the 2024 Biennale title “Foreigners everywhere” in 60 different languages. It is one of the installations that from Saturday 20 April to Sunday 24 November will characterize the sixtieth International Art Exhibition designed this year by the Brazilian Adriano Pedrosa, artistic director of the São Paulo Art Museum.
The 2024 Biennale is a journey to celebrate the foreigner.
Both in the usual sense and in the more introspective one: feeling like a stranger within yourself wherever you live.
In the Corderie dell’Arsenale space, a journey through the works of international artists with particular attention to the countries of the southern hemisphere. Traditional forms of art prevail, from textiles to painting.
In the Italian pavilion the theme of the foreigner is expressed in a rather particular way. An iron scaffolding as if to say let’s shorten the distances combined with the intense music of the organ.
The historic pavilions at the Giardini della Biennale. Very long queue to visit the one in the United States which celebrates the culture of indigenous people and American outsiders. Treat me well is called one of the works. Also in this case a welcome message to shorten distances. The Russian pavilion closed in 2022 after the invasion of Ukraine reopens its doors and hosts Bolivia.
Closed instead for the Israeli pavilion. For a few days now, the words “will reopen with the ceasefire and the release of the hostages” have been on the shop window. Meanwhile in the morning, a group of demonstrators waved Palestinian flags in front of the Israeli and United States pavilions. «In times of war – the president of the Biennale Pietrangelo Buttafuoco said in a press conference – this becomes a place of peace».
