now he lives with a herd of elk

A domestic donkey that escaped from its owners five years ago in California has been found with a herd of wild moose. The story reached newspapers around the world thanks to a video shot by a hiker and published on Instagram. As reported by the BBC, Terrie and Dave Drewry, from Auburn, are convinced that the animal, filmed in early June, is their donkey “Diesel”. The couple said they were relieved to know that the animal was safe and decided to leave it free to roam with his new family.

The unexpected discovery

Diesel had become frightened and ran away during a hike with Mr Drewry near Clear Lake, California, in 2019. Despite weeks of searching by volunteers, no results had emerged: “In the end we almost gave up,” he said Mrs. Drewry on CBS: “There were no signs of him.” In early June, hiker Max Fennell spotted a herd of moose, describing the donkey accompanying them as “happy and healthy.” He then shared the video on social media. “It was amazing. He’s living his best life. He is happy. He is healthy, and it was just a relief »said Mrs. Drewry.

Diesel’s new life with the moose herd

The elk herd was located a few kilometers from where Diesel disappeared, in an area where there are no wild donkeys. “Two completely different creatures, but learning to live together and be each other’s family,” Ms. Drewry explained.

The decision to set him free

As confirmed to the BBC, the Drewrys have adopted new donkeys since Diesel’s disappearance and do not intend to capture their lost animal. “Catching him would be almost impossible,” Ms. Drewry said. “He’s really a wild ass now. He’s out there doing what he was born to do.” She added that Diesel is about eight years old and that donkeys can live up to 40 years.
