Ukraine asks for clarifications on the final peace summit document in Switzerland: here’s why

The Kiev authorities have announced that they will ask the Swiss government for clarification on the countries that signed the final declaration of the peace summit for Ukraine celebrated over the weekend in Switzerland. The request was made due to the lack of presence in the final text of the signatures of Iraqi and Jordanian representatives, two countries which according to Kiev had committed to supporting the final text.

“Today we will contact our colleagues in Bern and once again discuss the full list of signatory countries. I was personally present when the results of the communiqué accession process were announced and these countries were on the final board in the hall which the session was held,” said Oleksander Bevz, a top advisor to the Ukrainian presidential office.

Kiev does not intend to draw immediate conclusions on what happened, he added, and considers the text “always open” for possible accessions. Bevz – reports Ukrinform – also conceded that some countries had signaled from the beginning their intention not to sign the text: “This is probably linked to the particularities of certain political processes in those countries. Some countries were directly subjected to pressure, and the President Zelensky has repeatedly spoken about this both in relation to participation in the summit and whether or not to adhere to the final document.” The final list of signatory countries does not include Jordan and Iraq, as well as India, Saudi Arabia and Mexico, among others.

Russian Embassy: “To resolve the situation, do not brandish Italy’s ninth military aid package”

“If we really want to talk seriously about stopping ‘this difficult situation’, it would be enough not to brandish the ninth package of Italian military aid in Kiev, giving up further supplies of weapons and returning, instead, to the language of peace, abandoning that of war” . This is what we read at the conclusion of a comment published on social media by the Russian embassy in Italy which refers to the fact that “Antonio Tajani, Vice President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic, speaking on 15 June 2024 at the so-called ‘Conference on Peace in Ukraine’ in Switzerland, he declared: ‘We are ready to send a new military package because without our defense it is impossible to work for reconstruction’.

“It is difficult to believe – continues the Russian embassy’s comment – that such a highly esteemed and highly experienced politician did not realize that the reference to arms supplies was out of place in an event in which, in theory, negotiations and diplomacy. Obviously, the numerous commitments on the agenda, intensely dedicated in the West to the Ukrainian issue, may have played a trick on the Minister, making him believe that it was yet another meeting within the framework of the EU, NATO or the G7”.

“Although it is more likely that for the Italian Foreign Minister it was a Freudian slip – he concludes – which revealed the true meaning of the so-called ‘peace’ conference in Ukraine on the Bürgenstock, organized by the Kiev regime and its Western supporters , who behind a useless screen hid their true aggressive plans, connected to weapons and war”.
