New BMW M5: hybrid engines, power and performance

The seventh generation of the German sports car par excellence, the BMW M5, presents several innovations. The main novelty is the advent of a plug-in hybrid engine, called M Hybrid. The latter combines a 4.4 biturbo V8 engine, which reaches up to 7,200 rpm, and an electric unit located in the gearbox, which ensures 197 HP and 280 Nm. The maximum power of the system is 727 HP with a torque of 1,000 Nm. These numbers allow the new BMW M5 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h as standard, but the limit can be raised to 305 km/h if the optional M Driver’s Package is specified. The eight-speed M Steptronic transmission contributes to ensuring rapid gear changes, with the power being channeled to the road via the M xDrive all-wheel drive system, whose rear configuration is particularly pronounced in 4WD Sport mode. The autonomy in electric mode declared by the manufacturer is 67-69 km, ensured by the 18.6 kWh battery rechargeable from an external energy source. The car will be shown to the public in July during the Festival of Speed in Goodwood. In the same period, production will begin in the German factory in Dingolfing. Global launch a Novemberwhen the Touringi.e. the station wagon version.

muscles galore

The new BMW M5 stands out for its very muscular style, with distinctive elements such as the marked extensions of the wheel arches, the profiled side skirts, the sculptural design of the front bumper and the specific details surrounding the C-pillar, including the engraved M5 logo. The extensive use of surfaces painted in the same color as the bodywork enhances its sober appearance, “lightening” the style. Also of great impact is the sports exhaust system, which underlines the performance experience with an emotionally engaging engine note. It is equipped with electrically and continuously adjustable flaps and two pairs of double tailpipes, already known from other M models, each with 100 millimeter finishes in Black Chrome. Acoustically accompanying the power delivery of the electric motor is the BMW Iconic Sounds Electric. This M-specific electric drive sound provides authentic responses to accelerator movements when the car is running in all-electric mode.

luxury and technology

The interiors of the new M5 expertly mix technology and luxury. In addition to the M-specific control panel on the center console, the sporty interior also contains a newly developed flat-bottomed M leather steering wheel with illuminated M buttons, M multifunction seats with a wide range of electric adjustments and the BMW Curved Display. The latter, like the standard BMW Head-Up display, includes M-specific content. The Live Cockpit Professional (standard) also offers the BMW Maps navigation system and the Augmented View function on the control display. The multimedia system is based on the BMW iDrive which is based on the BMW 8.5 operating system, designed to be used via touch controls and natural voice. Digital technology also covers the controls of the climate control functions. Temperature selection, airflow intensity, seat heating and steering wheel heating can now be controlled by touch via a menu item in the lower section of the control display or by voice command.

dynamic qualities

Despite the Xxl dimensions (509 cm in length) and weight (2,510 kg), the M engineers ensure excellent dynamic performance, made possible by refined suspensions that combine the double front arm with the rear multilink. The electronically controlled shock absorbers and rear steering wheels ensure the right comfort for this new BMW M5. For those who want more, carbon-ceramic brakes are available as an option.
