The European Parliament has released some exit polls, processed by Ipsos, on the European elections in the Netherlands: according to the data, the Labour-Green coalition led by Frans Timmermans is ahead of the far right of Geert Wilders. The pro-European alliance would obtain 8 seats compared to the 7 assigned to the Party for Freedom (PVV). The Dutch went to the vote on June 6th and the exit polls confirm what emerged immediately after the vote. Voter turnout, according to the estimate released by Ipsos, was 47%, up from 42% five years ago (EUROPEAN: THE SPECIAL – LIVE UPDATES).

The situation in Holland

The far-right, therefore, should not have made a breakthrough in the Netherlands: Geert Wilders gains 7 seats in the European Chamber where he was absent until now, but would place himself behind the pro-European Labor-Green ticket led by Frans Timmermans. The real outcome will only be understood with the real data from the ballot. But, compared to the forecasts according to which Wilders was destined to overtake his rivals, the country recorded a surprise result, also confirmed by the other exit polls. The Eurosceptic and anti-Islam leader, still strong from the exploits recorded in the political elections in November, nevertheless claimed victory by celebrating his rise “to 7 seats”: “It’s super exciting because we can still become the biggest when the final results!”, he wrote on X in recent days. While Frans Timmermans, having averted the overtaking of his bitter enemy, chose not to use words but to honor the result of the alliance by publishing a tweet with two hearts – one red and one green – and a photo of an energetic handshake with the gregarious Bas Eickhout.

The other parties

Among Wilders’ government allies, the right-wing liberals (VVD) of outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte, led by the former child refugee of Kurdish origins Dilan Yesilgoz, would come third with 4 seats in the exit polls, while the centrists of the New Social Contract of Pieter Omtzigt and the Farmers’ Movement (BBB) would gain one and two seats respectively. A seat would also go to the Forum for Democracy (FvD) led by the rampant populist Thierry Baudet, recently overshadowed by the reborn star of Wilders.
