In Lilli Gruber’s studio on the Thursday 6 June episode of Otto e mezzo, on La7, there is the leader of the 5 Star Movement Giuseppe Conte debating the hottest topics of the electoral campaign for the European elections with the director of Libero, Mario Sechi . The tone is raised several times, especially when talking about the former prime minister’s proposals on the war between Russia and Ukraine. Sechi asks questions about Conte’s idea of peace: “Which borders should they negotiate? What does Putin get and what does Zelensky get?”. Conte distances himself by stating that he is not the one who has to negotiate: “In your opinion it is difficult to reach an agreement, so shall we go to a third nuclear world war?”.
At that point Gruber intervenes: but should the Russians return the conquered lands or not? The 5 Star Movement begins to hypothesize the guarantees that Russia would have an interest in defending in a potential negotiation, from the protection of “Russophile populations” to not allowing Ukraine to join NATO. “But all this must be the subject of negotiation”, he remarks even if, it is contested, he does not explain what is a possible path to a peace of which there is not a shadow to be seen after more than two years of war. “He’s throwing the ball into the stands,” Sechi cuts short, “I haven’t received a response yet.”
At that point Conte plays the Western mobilization card: “Sechi, do you want to send your sons to fight in Ukraine?”. “In short, the mantra is that the territories must be negotiated: “Even a primary school child could get there”, attacks the director of Libero. “But do I have to write the peace treaty here in front of you?”, replies the 5Stelle while the tones they get up so much that Gruber has to intervene to restore calm: “Television viewers, be patient…”.
