at least nine deaths in Mexico

At least Nine people, including a child, died in Monterey, a city in northeastern Mexicoafter the stage on which he was holding a rally one of the candidates for the presidential elections it collapsed due to strong gusts of wind. According to the governor of the state of Nuevo León, there are at least fifty injured.

On stage were the candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez and other members of the «Citizen Movement» party. The structure, assembled on a baseball field in the city of San Pedro Garza García, hosted an electoral event for the candidate of the «Movement» for the election as mayor of the city, Lorenia Canavati. Álvarez Máynez wrote on social media that she is “fine” after the collapse and that she has spoken to state authorities to help them determine what happened.

The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, confirmed that it was the wind that caused the collapse and expressed his closeness to the victims’ families: “I embrace the families, the friends of the victims and the supporters of that party.” The governor of Nuevo León warned the population, again on social media: «We are witnessing lightning storms. Very strong winds and heavy rain are expected for the next few hours,” she said. “There has already been a tragedy.”
