Tesla gets first green light for German Gigafactory expansion plan

Tesla he is facing many difficulties in carrying out his project expansion plan for the German Gigafactory. Now, there’s something new. The Gruenheide City Councilnear Berlin, has approved expansion plans presented by the American car manufacturer. The OK arrived with 11 votes in favor and 2 abstentions. It must be said that at the end of February, the expansion plan was rejected by citizens who participated in a public consultation. Non-binding vote but which could have weighed on the decisions of the City Council.

STILL SEVERAL OBSTACLES TO OVERCOME

The process for obtaining authorizations for the expansion of the German factory it is certainly not finished and Tesla will have to overcome other obstacles. In fact, the green light will also have to come from the local authorities for the protection of the environment. Meanwhile, protests by environmentalists continue and local groups who fear the plant’s expansion could put the region’s water supply at risk.

Problems with environmental groups have always punctuated the plan to build the German Gigafactory. Precisely for this reason, the company intervened several times to modify the factory project. In particular, the automaker had revised its water management and reuse system to convince environmentalists. Interventions which, however, did not convince these groups.

Coming to more recent events, earlier this month some protesters clashed with the police while trying to enter the Tesla factory. We cannot fail to remember the sabotage of the power lines which forced the American company to interrupt the operation of the plant for several days.

The new project of Elon Musk’s company essentially concerns the creation of a new logistics area on an area of 170 hectares. Originally, the construction of the new buildings would have required the felling of over 100 hectares of forest which later became 47 after citizens voted no to the project during the public consultation. Expansion, therefore, functional above all to the improvement of production processes.
